Wakulla County is fortunate to be blessed with paddling
trails throughout the county, from the Ochlockonee River, Sopchoppy and Wakulla
Rivers to the St. Marks River, along with plenty of side trips to Shepherds Spring
at Spring Creek and East River at the Lighthouse in St. Marks Wildlife Refuge or
the many sink holes to visit. Set a relaxed pace to visit and enjoy the regions
streams, rivers, springs, historical sites, as well as wildlife havens. From
the saltwater to fresh water it is an anglers paradise. On the coastline you will
paddle over sea grass meadows filled with redfish, speckled trout, red drum and
mullet, along with a host of wading birds feeding in sea grass beds at low tide.
In the fresh water streams and rivers there are bass, brim and catfish, along with
river otters, manatees, alligators and turtles. At the brackish waters where
the salt and fresh waters meet you have the best of both worlds.
Among the favorite of rivers is the Wakulla River,
fed from Wakulla Springs, it is one of the most pristine in the world. Abundant
with wildlife, osprey and eagle nest in the cypress trees in March, the manatees
arrive in April, all to fill the summer with sightings till the fall. The
crystal clear water gives you the opportunity to view snails on the turtle grass,
bass and alligator gar pass under your boat while a mullet jumps out of the water
next to you. River otter play under the cypress trees while the great blue
heron perches on the limb. Lazy turtles and alligators sleep on the banks
or fallen tree limbs only to slip off into the water as you approach. Bird
watching is almost as common in the groups that congregate on the river as is the
manatee observers.
